Lahore: The Punjab government has announced plans to restore 170 historic sites across the province as part of a major tourism and heritage initiative. The move comes with the establishment of the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority, which will oversee the preservation and promotion of these sites.
According to officials, the sites include temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and churches, which will be transformed into international-standard tourist destinations. The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to boost tourism, preserve cultural heritage, and improve infrastructure.

A three-phase restoration plan has been incorporated into the annual development program, with the first phase set to begin in June. The provincial cabinet has received the official summary for approval, while tenders for the projects are expected to open in July.
The plan includes upgrading roads, enhancing tourism facilities, and modernizing key locations such as Taxila, which will be developed into an international “tourist city.” Changa Manga is also set to be transformed into a modern leisure resort. Additionally, 46 inactive gurdwaras will be restored to facilitate Sikh pilgrims, while new temples and galleries dedicated to Siddhartha will be built in Taxila to accommodate Buddhist followers.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has approved all proposed projects under the new initiative, and the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority Act 2024 has been enacted to ensure smooth execution. Officials have also been instructed to expedite the preparation of PC-1 for various tourism projects.
