The government will build 200-megawatt solar power systems atop WASA disposal centres as part of the scheme. According to the details, the Punjab Energy Department has submitted bids for the solar power project for the WASA. The initiative is estimated to save PKR 5 billion in power costs drawn from the national grid. It was reported that WASA spends PKR 460 million per month on running 591 tube wells and other WASA facilities in Lahore alone. The burden grows year after year, owing to rising power costs and a stalled price of water surcharges since 2004.

Similarly, in the report submitted to the provincial government, it was revealed that the cost of renewable energy will benefit the government in achieving its Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The report also quoted that as per World Bank (WB) a total of 67% of the rural population in developing countries like Pakistan lives without a steady supply of electricity. It was argued in the report that the project will be a big step towards the development of sustainable and alternative renewable energy sources.
