Lahore: The Punjab government has announced the formation of an ‘Environment Protection Authority’ to combat smog and improve environmental quality, as reported by national news media.
Marriyum Aurangzeb revealed that this authority will enforce environmental protection regulations effectively. Reportedly, a Smog Monitoring Sectoral Cell has been established within the Department of Planning and Development, comprising representatives from various departments.
The provincial government has initiated the groundwork for establishing a legal framework aligned with the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s environmental vision, with an action plan for immediate enforcement of regulations across different departments.
Additionally, strict regulations have been imposed on brick kilns, with non-compliant kilns already sealed, and mandatory fitness certificates required for vehicles emitting smoke or having faulty engines. Industries will be mandated to install smoke emission control systems to reduce harmful emissions.
