Lahore: The Punjab government has approved the establishment of the Punjab Special Planning Authority (PSPA) to curb illegal housing societies and streamline urban development across the province.
The decision was made in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where officials discussed proposals for zoning regulations and sustainable urban planning. The PSPA will be responsible for district land use planning and zoning, with periodic reviews every four years to ensure compliance with evolving urban needs.

The meeting also emphasized the need for eco-friendly and walkable housing societies, with separate planning for commercial and residential areas. A special planning committee will be set up in each district, led by the respective deputy commissioner and comprising representatives from WAPDA, Sui Gas, WASA, and other service providers.
To prevent land misuse, the government will introduce a violation tracking mechanism through a ‘District Digital Wall’ that will monitor unauthorized land conversions. Additionally, a fast-track approval system will be implemented for legal housing projects based on digital data.
CM Maryam Nawaz underscored the importance of structured urban planning, stating that unregulated expansion has led to the unchecked rise of illegal housing schemes. She directed authorities to ensure swift action on pending applications related to the housing sector and called for daily progress reports on the Lahore Development Plan.
