Lahore: The Punjab government on Monday (November 29) has decided to prohibit the establishment of school campuses on main roads and highways, according to news sources. The decision was taken after an unfortunate incident took place on a highway in Bahawalpur.

Chief Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal chaired a meeting at the Civil Secretariat to discuss the safety of school children. The meeting was attended by the Lahore commissioner, Additional IG Motorway Police, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rao Sardar Ali Khan, administrative secretaries of excise, higher education, and schools education departments, while divisional commissioners participated through video link.
During the meeting, Chief Secretary Afzal ordered the authorities concerned to install cat’s eyes and signboards near schools, parks, and hospitals situated on the main roads and highways. He added that the schools must deploy four road crossing assistants under the supervision of a duty teacher at the opening and closure times of the schools.

Moreover, the chief secretary directed officials to survey all private schools near highways and main roads in order to identify high-risk institutions. He went on to say that the overhead bridges and service roads must be constructed to facilitate public safety.
