Lahore: Rescue 1122 Director General (DG) Dr Rizwan on Monday (October 10) announced the inspection of all high-rise buildings across Punjab for a fire safety hazard check, news sources reported.

Under the Rescue 1122 Community Safety Act 2022, the fire department will assess all highrises over five storeys for fire hazards. The rescue teams will evaluate highrises and send them two notices to make the necessary architectural adjustments. Failure to comply with the warning will result in the building being sealed on the third notice. In this regard, Rescue 1122 has asked that all owners of buildings with more than five stories register with the authority.

The latest policy shift was prompted by a fire in Islamabad’s prominent mall, which caused significant property damage. In its April notification, the rescue agency encouraged highrise building owners to register with the emergency services. It is vital to highlight that most high-rise buildings in Pakistan lack an adequate emergency evacuation strategy in the event of a fire.
