Lahore: The Punjab government has initiated preparations for smog prevention, particularly in Lahore where it can reach hazardous levels during the winter months — a news source reported on August 27. In this regard, the government departments’ concerned recently submitted their reports to Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar.

In addition, the CM instructed the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to form monitoring teams that are expected to keep a check on cement and stone-crushing plants. The EPD will also hold awareness campaigns in all the districts of the province.
Moreover, a report was submitted to the CM, which contained various recommendations for tackling smog. These included the following:
- Installation of cement plants far from urban areas
- Transfer of brick kilns to modern technology
- Use of environment-friendly fuel in industries

CM Buzdar also issued directions to the local commissioners to form their own monitoring teams in order to review the transfer of brick kilns to zigzag technology and to ensure that the process is completed within the pre-set time limit.
