Lahore: For provision of clean drinking water in the Punjab, the provincial government has formed the Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority, reported a news source. Punjab Governor Chaudhry Ghulam Sarwar signed the bill to formally sanction the project.

Previously, the Punjab Assembly approved the bill for formation of the water authority in March. According to the notification issued, Governor Sarwar will be its Patron-in-Chief.
The authority is expected to provide drinking water to 110 million people residing in Punjab. For this purpose, it will install water filtration plants across the province.

As per the stats shared by the governor, 80% of the people resident in Punjab continue to remain deprived of clean water – resulting in 1.1 million annual deaths due to waterborne diseases.
In addition to supplying clean water to the people of the province, the authority will also reportedly install water filtration plants in jails, hospitals and universities.
