Lahore: The Punjab government under the Local Government Ordinance 2021, has designated Murree a separate municipal corporation, news sources reported. The decision would effectively separate Murree from Rawalpindi. According to the notice, Lahore has likewise declared a metropolitan corporation with no district council. Similarly, it was stated that the Metropolitan, District Council, Neighborhood Council, and Village Council boundaries are being established.

As per the notification following changes have been made:
- There will be 10 municipal corporations in addition to the Metropolitan Corporation of Lahore
- There will be 182 municipal committees and 35 district councils in the province Punjab will have 36 districts, nine divisions, and 212 tehsils

The government has also declared a metropolitan corporation, with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) as its head. Of the 166 union councils in Rawalpindi, 96 are under the jurisdiction of Zila Councils, while the remaining 70 are under the jurisdiction of Metropolitan Corporation. The government recently declared the separation it from the Rawalpindi division to better manage tourism and respond to natural disasters. Murree was also designated as a tourist district.
