Lahore: Punjab Minister for Agriculture Malik Nauman Ahmad on Thursday shared the details for the measures in place to curb smog in the province, a news source reported. He stated that the provincial government intended to adopt a more proactive approach on the matter following the order issued by the Lahore High Court.

The provincial government has issued immediate instructions for the prevention of smog in Punjab. In this regard, it has asked all field staff to ensure the ban on burning crop residues and informing the farmers about the orders of the court.
According to details, a comprehensive campaign is on the cards for creating awareness among farmers and public on the matter of crop-residue burning and its negative effects on the environment. The agriculture minister also appealed to the farmers for adopting other safe methods to do so.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court had ordered the authorities concerned to implement Section 144 for banning the burning of crop residues in the province. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has continued its campaign against the use of polythene bags in Lahore. As per sources, the department had issued September 2 as the deadline for ending the use of plastic bags. Now, it is sealing all premises in the city found in violation of the rule.
