Lahore: The Punjab government and the World Bank (WB) have agreed to cooperate on providing potable water in Punjab, a news source reported. The provincial government has approved a feasibility study to this effect.
The bank’s representatives met Chairman Planning & Department (P&D) Habib-ur-Rehman Gillani. During the meeting, it was agreed that the WB will assist the provincial government in its water supply schemes.
The Punjab government has also offered to conduct feasibility study in the province. According to officials, WB will provide aid after the study is completed.
The government is also working on developing a water authority to provide clean drinking water. Governor Chaudhry Sarwar had announced that the authority will manage all water-related issues.
Previously, Sarwar had said that unsafe drinking water leads to about 1.1 million deaths per annum. As per reports, at least 20% of Punjab’s population is currently suffering from water-borne diseases.
