Lahore: The Punjab government recently withdrew its notification for no tenant eviction over non-payment of rents during the coronavirus lockdown, a news source reported. Following citations of landlords, who solely depended on rent collection for livelihoods, the provincial government announced its withdrawal of the notification.

Earlier, the Punjab government had notified that no landlord would evict tenants ‘forcefully, illegally, or without due process of law’ for not paying or delaying rents during the coronavirus lockdown. The notification issued on April 10 was valid for two months but had now been made void.
The provincial government received information that several tenants were exploiting the notification. These were individuals that were well off and could afford rent, but were no longer making due payments in the wake of the notification. However, the Punjab government has acknowledged that there were labourers and daily wagers that were unable to pay rents during these tough times.

The Punjab government now seeks to amend the tenant-eviction notification so that it only benefits the deserving individuals – protecting the rights of tenants with low incomes, having lost their jobs, or no longer going to work during the lockdown.
