Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has directed the authorities concerned to acquire over 16,000-kanals of land for the construction of the Daducha Dam — with the initiative aimed at resolving the city’s water shortage issues, according to a news source published on September 23.

Reportedly, the provincial government has allocated PKR 1.5 billion for the said project’s development. While talking to the media, Commissioner (retired) Captain Mohammad Mehmood revealed that the government planned on initiating two main water supply projects in order to end the water shortage in the Potohar region.

He further stated that he had already directed the revenue department to start the process of land acquisition for the aforementioned project, and schedule the payments for its landowners. The said land will be acquired under Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. The Daducha Dam is expected to be constructed upstream from the Soan River and is estimated to have the capacity to provide 25 million gallons of daily (MGD) water to the city areas.
In a separate meeting, the commissioner additionally said that the Mahuta Dam was an important project for the Chakwal area for storing and utilizing rainwater in order to boost the region’s agriculture sector.
