Lahore: The Punjab government recently rejected reports claiming that the disbanded patwari system was being reintroduced in the province as part of a ‘model experiment’, according to a news source. As per the publication, the government has denounced these claims; stating them to be ‘concocted and fake’.

Furthermore, the government also announced that it would be taking legal action against the individuals responsible for publishing this news story. Through its official Twitter account, the Punjab government stated that the computerization of land record systems was being extended to villages, while qanoon gois (revenue circles) were also being set up in the province. In addition, the authorities concerned have been directed to recruit computer literate and qualified village officers to run the operations of these facilities.

Furthermore, the provincial government announced that the Arazi (Land) Record Centres will continue to operate under the existing mode of operations. It also announced that the involvement of patwaris from the land record and documentation process would slowly be phased out in an attempt to make the entire system more transparent and secure.

The news report in question had alleged that the Punjab Revenue Board had finalised the Mandra and Chakri areas in Rawalpindi for the reintroduction of the patwari system — as part of a model experiment.
