Lahore: Punjab Minister for Environmental Protection Bao Muhammad Rizwan on Monday (November 15) announced the formation of five anti-smog squads for Lahore to check increasing smog in the city, news sources reported. Members from the departments of environmental protection, police, city administration, LESCO, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), and Municipal Corporation Limited (MCL) will constitute the squads.

According to sources, these smog squads would be empowered to inspect numerous industrial units, vehicles, agricultural units, and other facilities. The minister also announced that the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) will launch a pilot project to develop solutions to address the province’s root cause of pollution. Furthermore, Minister Rizwan stated that the government has formed district-level committees that would work in partnership with smog squads to reduce stubble burning activities.

Moreover, the minister said that automobile pollution accounts for 45% of smog, while industrial pollution accounts for 25% and agricultural pollution accounts for 20%. He asked citizens to take special precautions to protect themselves, decrease smog, and assist the government in identifying pollution by recording their complaints on the government helpline.
