As reported in the details, the initiative is aimed at modernising the province’s transportation infrastructure. The proposed rail line is designed to operate at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, which would significantly reduce the travel time between the two cities to less than two hours. The estimated cost of the project is approximately USD 1.6 billion.
Currently under review, the proposal for the high-speed rail is seen as a potential milestone in Pakistan’s transportation sector. If approved, it would provide a faster and more efficient travel option for residents of both cities. However, securing the necessary funding remains a challenge, as the project is still in its initial planning stages.
In addition to the high-speed rail, the Punjab government has also green-lit a tram service for Lahore. The planned 11-kilometre route will cover key areas such as Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road, with stops located every 1 to 1.5 kilometres. The project aims to offer a convenient mode of transportation for commuters in the city’s busy districts.

The trams, inspired by designs from Finland and China, promise a comfortable and modern commuting experience. While a specific launch date has not been announced, authorities are focused on completing the project swiftly. Ticket prices will be confirmed closer to the service’s launch. This tram initiative is part of a broader series of infrastructure improvements for Lahore, including the development of a signal-free corridor from Kareem Block to the Motorway.
