Lahore: In a first for Pakistan, the Punjab Environment Department (EPD) has introduced a unique identification system for industries and brick kilns to enhance environmental monitoring and transparency.
According to Punjab Environment Director General (DG) Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has completed the e-mapping of all industrial units and kilns, assigning each a unique identification number. This system aims to streamline inspections and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
He stated that all EPA inspections will now be recorded under these unique identification numbers, and entering them into the Eco Watch app has been made mandatory for field officers. The app will store inspection data, including images, videos, and locations, creating a digital record of each unit’s environmental compliance.

“It will be necessary to enter the identification number of each unit or kiln during inspections. Once the data is uploaded to the Eco Watch app, the unit’s complete compliance history, violations, and any actions taken will be documented sequentially,” DG Imran Hamid Sheikh said.
The EPD has made it clear that any violations in the inspection process will result in action against responsible officials under the Punjab Environmental Protection Act (PEDA). This new system is expected to improve monitoring, ensure accountability, and help control environmental pollution.
Necessary instructions have already been issued to all relevant departments, officers, and field inspectors, ensuring a more structured and transparent approach to environmental regulation in Punjab.
