Rawalpindi: The Punjab government will hire consultants to validate optimal routes for the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) and establish an economic corridor along it, news sources reported on August 28.
The decision was taken during the Consultant Selection Committee (CSC) meeting for mega projects, chaired by Rawalpindi Commissioner Noorul Amin Mengal.The committee decided that a firm for project’s feasibility would be selected within the next 45 days, as the consultation for the two-phase project is expected to take 150 days. The consulting firms will be in charge of the following tasks:
● The hired firm would work on the project in two phases: Phase-I would determine the best path for the economic corridor and will be completed in 60 days, and Phase-II would provide comprehensive planning for land use along the Ring Road’s third-party certified alignment to be completed in 90 days.
● The total project budget is PKR 90 million, with PKR 30 million set aside for the first phase and PKR 60 million for the second one.
● The hired firm will choose a viable path that would aid in the easy approach and connectivity of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
According to the Project Concept-1 (PC-1), the proposed route will include economic zone components such as envisaged industrial units, education and health zones, recreational areas, central business districts, theme parks, high-rise building zones, and relocation and establishment of commercial markets, truck/bus terminals.
It is pertinent to note that following Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to the UAE, the government has identified five significant projects for foreign investment. These projects include the Parco coastal refinery Phase-I oil import terminal, the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway, the Rawalpindi Ring Road, the Karachi Circular Railway, and the Thar Block-II railway network link.
