Lahore: The Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) has announced the launch of the Punjab Cities Programme (PCM) Phase-II for 16 municipal committees across the province from January onwards, news sources reported on January 2. The PKR 38 billion project was launched in 2018 with the support of the World Bank (WB) and is expected to be completed by 2024.

As per the reports, the 16 municipalities included in the project are Daska, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Kamoke, Muridke, Wazirabad, Gojra, Jaranwala, Jhang, Kamalia, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Burewala, Khanewal, Kotaddu and Vehari. Under Phase-II of the project, development schemes related to water supply, sewerage, storm drainage, solid waste management, wastewater treatment plants, urban roads, parks and streetlights will be launched. As per the government’s spokesperson, 44 programmes in various districts and municipalities have been completed that were built and planned in accordance with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Punjab Growth Strategy and Vision 2025.

It was also reported that the International Development Association (IDA) launched the programme in 2018 with a USD 200 million ‘performance-based grant. The programme is aimed to assist 16 urban local governments in Punjab in delivering improved urban infrastructure that will aid in enhancing economic growth and development, as well as ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity.
