Lahore: The Punjab government on Wednesday (September 21) enacted Section 144 on the burning of crop leftover, garbage and paddy field stubble to control smog, news sources reported.

The decision was taken to lessen the likelihood of pollution over the upcoming winter season. It was resolved at a meeting presided over by Chief Secretary Abdullah Sumbal that the government would enforce its writ to reduce air pollution in order to save the citizens from air pollution. He also urged local governments and environmental protection agencies to organise teams to inspect industrial facilities. The meeting also decided to enforce proper fuel consumption in industrial units across the province, including the inspection of smoke-reducing technologies.

It is vital to note that the government has already formed a “Smog Squad” that would inspect automobiles and industrial facilities, including brick kilns to enforce proper environmental standards. The move is part of the government’s attempt to address the city’s growing air pollution problem, which has continuously ranked Lahore at the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities.
