Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Ch Pervaiz Elahi and Chinese Consul General Lahore Zhao Shiren recently completed talks to install an anti-smog tower in and around industrial zones and border areas in collaboration with a Chinese firm. The Chinese Council presented a comprehensive demonstration of the tower’s capabilities and reported that it has been successful in reducing PM 2.5 levels by 15% in peak seasons in China. It is important to note Lahore has been ranked among the worst cities in the world for air quality in the last few years, prompting the Punjab government to declare the situation a calamity and set up emergency squads to inspect vehicles and industrial units. To further improve the air quality, the government has mandated that all new buildings must provide charging stations for electric vehicles before they can be granted No-Objection Certificates (NOCs).
