Rawalpindi: The Punjab government recently announced its decision to include the Rawalpindi District in the second phase of the Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Programme (PICIIP) — according to news sources.

PICIIP is an Asian Development Bank (ADB) initiative that has been launched in Sialkot and Sahiwal, and is currently in its first phase of development. The second phase of the project is set to be launched in the Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Multan, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh districts.
The PICIIP is aimed at enhancing the quality of life in these selected cities, and is being launched with an estimated budget of PKR 27 billion.

Rawalpindi Commissioner Captain (retired) Mohammad Mehmood chaired a meeting that was organized to discuss the scope of the project. He took the opportunity to say that the aim of the programme was to address urban development challenges in the cities. These challenges include city integrated planning, improved urban service delivery through an upgraded institutional framework, improved infrastructure, and streamlined business processes.
The meeting was informed that the provincial government was looking to introduce upgraded and sustainable infrastructure and connectivity; as well as to promote economic growth and boost productivity for the harmonious growth and enrichment of the citizens’ lives.
