Karachi: Urban planner and architect Arif Hasan stated that agricultural farms and fields in Karachi’s outskirts should be protected and developed as a green shield against heatwaves, according to a news report. He said this at a conference titled ‘Exploring Strategies to Respond to Heatwaves in Karachi’ on Thursday. This was organised by a group of citizens at the Urban Resource Centre’s office.
Hasan stated that these green areas, especially ones in Malir and Gadap, must be protected so that heat sinks are not created and the economy remains sustainable as well. ‘By making rural Karachi economically viable, we can make Karachi city cooler’, he emphasised. He also recommended the usage of home insulation to reduce the use of air conditioners.
