Lahore: Punjab Housing Minister Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed has inaugurated the project to reuse ablution water from mosques for irrigating plants, according to a news source. Speaking at the occasion, Rasheed said that the project will help save water.
During the inauguration ceremony, Rasheed was joined by Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Chariman Sheikh Imtiaz Mehmood, WASA Managing Director Syed Zahid Uzair and Project Director Mujeeb Raza Warseen and other officials.
Under this project, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will channel water used for ablution in masjid to the parks it manages for irrigating plants. Initially, it will done for parks that are connected with a mosque or have a mosque in its premises.
To formally launch the project, ablution water in Jamia Masjid Namra in Johar Town is being used for irrigating plants in the park connected with it. This will save 60% of water required for irrigating this particular park. It is expected that the same practice will applied in all parks that have a masjid in them or one located close to it.
WASA had previously recommended PHA to not use subsoil water for irrigating parks. This was decided as an attempt to stop subsoil water level from dropping further in the city.
