Karachi: The Sindh government recently announced its plan to launch 200 hybrid buses (running on biogas fuel) in Karachi soon — with the initiative falling under the auspices of the Clean and Green Pakistan Index (CGPI)’s Green Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, according to news sources.
This Green BRT project was announced a year ago and is now ready for launch. In its initial phase, the biogas-powered buses will cover several routes in Karachi. The shift of mass transport buses to biogas fuel (created from animal waste) is part of the federal government’s efforts to control environmental pollution and prevent further climate damage in the country.

The zero-pollution biogas buses are being launched in cooperation with the United Nation’s Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The Green BRT project is being developed with a cost of USD 49 million. If the project is successful, the plan is to extend the scope of the project to other metropolises in the country like Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, and Faisalabad.

The government has developed 25 new bus stations, modern pedestrian crossings, sidewalks and cycle lanes for the smooth launch of the initiative. These environment-friendly buses will run on a 30-kilometre-long route for the convenience of the city’s many residents.
