Lahore: Senior Minister Punjab Abdul Aleem Khan recently revealed that ‘practical progress’ on the establishment of a separate South Punjab province had been launched and that the development of a new secretariat was a good step in that direction, according to news sources.

The minister stated that additional powers would be delegated to the new province in the future, and that the incumbent government was striving to fulfil its promises regarding the provision of requisite facilities to the people living in remote areas. He said that it was Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision to bring the people belonging to these areas at par with the residents of more developed areas — with an equitable distribution of health, education and employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar announced yesterday (July 1) that the Additional Chief Secretary (South) and Additional Inspector General (South) had been selected and that both individuals would be assuming office on the same day. Additionally, non-transferable funds have been allocated for the province’s backward districts — with 33% of these funds reserved for South Punjab. Moreover, the Punjab government allocated a further PKR 1.5 billion for the development of the southern Punjab Secretariat.
