Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi has urged the need for an attitudinal shift from rapid consumption to conservation of water and energy in order to enable the country to overcome its financial and economic difficulties, news sources reported on December 9.

Speaking at the opening plenary of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute’s (SDPI) 25th sustainable development conference in Islamabad, the president said that the country could save between 3,000 and 4,000 MW of electricity by closing businesses early at night. He also suggested that the country could save precious rainwater and reuse it for agriculture and other purposes by building small and large water reservoirs.

President Alvi emphasized the need for attitudinal change and total commitment to overcoming the country’s economic and financial issues and building the foundations for a happy life. He also called for the adaptation of people and society to the expected changes brought about by climate change in order to create a resilient society capable of adapting to changes in the environment and successfully dealing with natural disasters induced by climate change and global warming.
