Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi has reconstituted the 13-member National Economic Council (NEC), an economic advisory body to manage overall economic conditions and formulate plans, news sources reported on June 08. The body has been revived under article 156 of the constitution of Pakistan.

Reportedly, the president approved the formation of the body with the Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif as its head, and the four chief ministers of provinces as their permanent members. The body is composed of members of the federal and provincial governments, as well as members nominated by the premier and chief ministers, respectively. It was also revealed that PM Shehbaz has nominated Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar and Communications Minister Asad Mehmood from the federal government to become part of the NEC.
The provincial governments have nominated Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari from Punjab, Senator Nisar Khoro from Sindh, Taimur Saleem Jhagra from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Noor Muhammad Damar from Balochistan.

As per the constitution, the committee is bound to meet twice per year to deliberate on matters of mutual interest and economic distribution between the provinces and the federal government.
