Islamabad: The Pakistan Railways (PR) on Monday announced its decision to implement railway safety infrastructure and monitoring system at all of its level crossings to reduce number of accidents in the country, a news source reported.

To this effect, a high-level meeting took place at the Railways Ministry on railway safety operation and unmanned level crossings. Many high-ranking officials of the ministry attended the meeting.
The meeting decided to take strict actions against drivers violating safety measures. The members of the meeting also took several decisions pertaining to safety operations and level crossings. It also decided upon conducting an awareness campaign for the masses.

According to the data presented during the meeting, majority of the accidents took place at unmanned level crossings. The Railways Ministry revealed that it would require an estimated amount of PKR 25 billion for upgrading these unmanned level crossings across Pakistan. It added that these included 550 vulnerable and 143 most vulnerable unmanned level crossings.
