Lahore: The contribution of the Neelum-Jhelum power plant has increased to 484 Megawatts (MW), as Units 2 and 3 are generating power at maximum capacity, according to a news report. Unit 3 has been taken over by Wapda after completing its reliability period, while Unit 2 is still being tested. Unit 4 has started its reliability test while unit 1 is undergoing various tests in accordance with the contractual obligations and is expected to go on trial generation next month.
The Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric power plant has 90% of its construction underground and beneath the high mountainous areas. The project is constructed on River Neelum and has a dam in Nauseri, an underground waterway system of 52-km-long tunnels and an underground powerhouse at Chattar Kalas with four power generating units.
The project is expected to provide about 5 billion units of electricity to the national grid, with annual benefits of PKR 55 billion and will significantly contribute in enabling the country to meet electricity requirements.
