Karachi: The Energy Department on Tuesday (November 2) has finalised the Waste-to-Energy Policy 2021 after companies approached the provincial government to generate electricity and gas from waste in Jam Chakro, according to news sources.

As per the details shared, Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh chaired a meeting during which, the aims and objectives of the policy were discussed. It was disclosed that the companies will initially generate 150 megawatts (MW) from waste generated in the city. The objectives and aims of the policy were discussed in the meeting.
The managing director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) informed that there were two landfill sites – 450 acres in Gond Pass and 500-acre in Jam Chakra. On a daily basis, 10,000 tonnes of waste was produced in the city. The attendees were informed that 200 MW could be generated from the waste. Further, the managing director disclosed that the power generated from Jam Chakro can easily be provided to the distribution company, which has a grid station nearby.

Minister Imtiaz Shaikh stated that the main purpose of the government was to clean up Karachi’s waste by utilising it for energy generation. He went on to say that the Waste-to-Energy Policy will be submitted to the provincial cabinet for approval in the next meeting.
