Islamabad: Pakistan joined nations across the globe in observing International Earth Day on Monday, highlighting the theme ‘Planet vs Plastics’ to shed light on the detrimental effects of plastic usage on the environment, according to news sources. The day aimed to promote awareness about the urgent need to reduce plastic dependency, striving for a plastic-free Earth.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his address on the occasion, urged citizens to minimize plastic usage, adopt recycling practices, and advocate for stronger environmental policies at all societal levels.

Highlighting governmental efforts, he stated, “We have initiated an extensive consultative process involving ministries, provincial environment departments, ICT administration, industries, and other stakeholders to develop Single-Use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations, 2023.”
Moreover, Prime Minister Sharif announced restrictions on the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in federal ministries and divisions, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to fostering a sustainable circular economy for plastics. “These initiatives underscore our dedication to reducing waste, consumption, and promoting reuse and recycling,” he added.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, the Prime Minister lamented the lack of awareness regarding its risks, which pose significant threats to development, well-being, and economic security. He emphasized the worsening effects of climate change and stressed the importance of bold actions to confront these challenges and bolster resilience in the face of adversity.
