Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Monday issued instructions to the authorities concerned to propose ‘out of the box solutions’ to lower gas and power tariffs in the country, a news source reported. He further called for offering relief to domestic consumers.

The PM gave these directives while presiding over a high-level meeting held to review gas and power tariffs in the country. Several proposals were tabled before the meeting for consideration; including a long-term plan presented by Special Assistant to the PM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar.
The meeting was apprised of the challenges faced by the electricity and gas production and supply firms. It was further informed that the government was taking measures to prevent electricity theft and had generated PKR 122 billion in revenue under its ongoing anti-power theft drive. The circular debt has also been reduced to PKR 12 billion per month from previous PKR 36 billion.

The premiere was told that the government was trying to check the pilferage burden and line losses through reforms in both these sectors and that it was striving to ensure the provision of these facilities to domestic and industrial consumers at appropriate rates.
