Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan On Thursday (September 30) inaugurated a 600 kiloVolts (kV) transmission line running between Matiari and Lahore (dubbed ‘state-of-the-art’ by premier), news sources reported. The 886-kilometre-long transmission line is expected to address the energy demands of the country and curtail line losses.

The project, according to the premier, is part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and has been completed in three years. He also stated that the completion of CPEC projects is the government’s top priority. Despite the COVID-19 epidemic, the government has continued to work on the project, and it will be expedited further. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong also spoke at the event, stating that the project is anticipated to improve grid system safety and reliability, optimise energy distribution throughout the country, and decrease electricity costs.

The Matiari-Lahore transmission line project was launched in 2013, but formal work on the project could not start until 2018.
