Gilgit: Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam on Wednesday revealed that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan had recently inaugurated the Himalaya and Nanga Parbat National Parks in Gilgit-Baltistan — with the national parks spanning over an area of 3,600 square kilometres, according to news sources.

PM Khan — whose desire to mitigate the effects of climate change and deforestation is widely known — has been stressing on the development of the natural parks in order to promote eco-tourism and protect the endangered wildlife species in the area.
SAPM Amin stated that the said parks constituted 5% of the entire Gilgit-Baltistan area, and that they would help form a ‘nature corridor’ between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir. He went on to say that these newly developed parks comprised of a unique ecological area that inhabited rich high-altitude biodiversity and precious species, including the Himalayan brown bear, snow leopards, ibex, Laddakh Urial, markhor and blue sheep.

Mr Aslam further said that a proper community-based management system would be integrated in the national parks and that the PM had approved the constitution of the first National Park Service in GB — with this initiative expected to create 5,000 jobs for area’s youth population.
