Skardu: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Monday (July 05) directed the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to open the landslide-hit Skardu-Jalkot Road, news sources reported. The road is the single largest road connecting Baltistan with the rest of the country.

Reportedly, the premier took notice of the road blockage due to the heavy rain and landslide in the area. He asked the organisation to use more machinery and staff to clear the route ahead of the holidays so that people could return home before Eid. He also added that the Tormik segment of the route should be opened to restore land connectivity.

Furthermore, it was learned that the premier took note of the local business community’s request that the government restore the road link because tourists are expected to visit during the Eid holidays. According to the business community, the road closure will harm the region’s tourism-related commercial potential. It is worth mentioning that there has been a rise in landslide incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as a result of above-average precipitation during the monsoon season, which began on July 1.
