Gilgit Baltistan (GB): Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif visited the Diamer Bhasha Dam construction site on Sunday (April 17) and instructed the developers to hasten development work on the project in order to complete it by 2026, the news source reported. The PM urged the workers to put their maximum effort to achieve the completion of the 4,400 Megawatt hydroelectric project.

Reportedly, during a visit to the construction site, PM met with the working teams and asked about the development speed. On the occasion, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman retired Lt General Muzammil Hussain briefed the premier on the ongoing phases of the development. The premier lauded the working teams for their resilience in working at high and challenging altitudes. He said that the project completion will help ensure energy security for the country and will also contribute to the economy.

On the occasion, he asked international investors to invest in the multibillion-dollar project and reap the rewards once it is completed. The premier also announced the construction of a 13-kilometre-long tunnel at Babusar Top to connect locals with other regions during the winter season’s harsh weather conditions. In addition, the premier directed the chief secretary and the chairman of WAPDA to submit a proposal for a 300-bed hospital within one week.

It is important to note that the Diamer Bhasha Dam was inaugurated in 2016, and the government secured funds and investment for the project in 2020. The reservoir is expected to be one of the largest in the country.
