Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has called on the developed world to launch a global debt relief effort to assist developing countries in tackling the coronavirus pandemic — a news source reported. As per the publication, the premier said that the outbreak of the viral pandemic had raised fears of a global economic ‘slowdown’; underlining the fact that it could not be stopped unless the world community came up with an organised and collective response.

Additionally, the PM offered his cooperation to the UN Secretary General António Guterres in his efforts to advance the objectives of such a global response.
PM Khan also highlighted the initiatives taken by his own government so far. He said that his administration had provided a USD 8 billion stimulus package to help vulnerable citizens in the country.

Khan further said that as a part of his initiative, he would be reaching out to other world leaders; including members of the Paris Club and Highly Indebted Poor Countries. The PM also instructed Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the Adviser on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh to get in touch with their counterparts to coordinate their efforts in fighting the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
