Rawalpindi: A subcommittee on high-rise buildings is expected to brief Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on vertical constructions near the country’s airport installations, a news source reported. Previously, the body had announced its intention to permit the construction of high-rises within a 15.24-kilometer radius of these facilities.

Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan announced during a press conference on Tuesday that the cabinet was yet to convene on the issue and give its final approval. He stated that Civil Aviation rules 1994 stipulated restrictions on building heights within a 15.24-kilometre radius around airports; which were similar to the rules defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The minister added that forgoing these rules could prove to be dangerous for aircraft landing and take-off.

A senior Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) official said several officials had raised the issue of the construction of multi-storey buildings; adding that the subcommittee (headed by Deputy Director CAA General Air Commodore Nasir Hamdani) was formed to look into the matter. It is expected to provide briefings to PM Khan on such constructions in Islamabad and outline the areas which come in the flight path.
