Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Wednesday broke ground for the development of 20,000 housing units – which will cost up to PKR 100 billion, a news source reported. As per the publication, these units will be developed in Quetta, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad for salaried and low-income families.

The housing projects are launched under the Naya Pakistan Housing Project (NPHP) – for which the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA) will develop six projects, while the Pakistan Housing Authority Foundation (PHAF) will execute one project.

The prime minister reiterated his government’s commitment to construct five million houses across the country and compared the mortgage facility for housing in Pakistan (0.2 percent) with that of the United States (80 percent), United Kingdom (80 percent), and Malaysia (30 percent). He said that the development of affordable housing would ‘contribute to forty other industries, too’.

Khan voiced his opinions on the occasion about the condition of infrastructure within the metropolitan cities and stressed his government’s commitment to providing housing facilities to the poor. He lauded the initiatives of the Non-government organisation (NGO) ‘Akhuwat Foundation’ to provide housing to poor and vulnerable families.
