Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Thursday (September 23) the bifurcation of South Waziristan into two administrative zones, news sources reported. The decision was made to strengthen the administrative infrastructure and accelerate the region’s development.

PM Khan, during his address to a farmers’ convention, said development in the fields of agriculture, population control, timely provision of justice, end of the system of oppression, best educational environment, provision of better health facilities and increase in productivity is crucial for the development of the country. He also revealed that the government will build ten additional dams in the region, increasing the region’s water storage capacity from 14 million acre-feet (MAF) to 28 MAF.

The premier also distributed Kissan Cards to the region’s farmers during the event. According to sources, the Kissan Cards are being issued to 200,000 farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the first wave, out of 500,000 registered farmers. While in the second phase, the farmers will be given interest-free/low-margin loans, and harvests will be guaranteed. During the fiscal year 2021-22, farmers would get a subsidy of PKR 1,048.38 million to promote agriculture in the province.
