Rawalpindi: Owners of commercial buildings have been asked to submit their building plans approved by the civic bodies concerned, a news source reported. The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) will verify the documents.
The civic body has come up with the plan in its bid to take action against illegal buildings constructed before 2001. The records, however, are too fragile to be scrutinised as they were damaged during the 2001 floods in the garrison city.
The deputy commissioner had earlier directed RMC to utilise the basements of shopping centres for parking space, but the corporation is finding it difficult to take action against pre-2001 buildings.
Some buildings were constructed prior to the formation of building by-laws, which after their promulgation in 2009, banned the construction of three-storey buildings in the city. Under the said law, no shopping centres or commercial buildings can be taller than 30ft.
RMC officials are considering scanning the old documents as the process to check them thoroughly is time consuming.
