Islamabad: The representatives of the Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) informed the National Assembly’s Committee on Climate Change on Monday that the federal government has released PKR 1.25 billion for the plantation of 3.29 saplings in a four-year duration, under the 10 billion tsunami plantation drive, according to the news sources.
Climate Change Secretary Hassan Nasir Jamy briefed the assembly that these plantations mark the first phase of the 10-billion-tree project. He added that this project performs a pivotal role in conserving the country’s environment. He also opined that the government is seeking to establish a permanent roundtable to raise awareness in public regarding climate change, food security, and agriculture.

The officials of the Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC) explained to the meeting that the department was working on climate change profiles of Pakistan, and their socio-economic impact. They maintained that they are identifying the appropriate adaptation/mitigation strategies, as agriculture and the climate sector contributes 18.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP), and any impacts will reflect in a loss for the national economy.

The NA committee discussed various proposals to control the negative effects of climate change, and called for measures to create awareness in public about the seriousness of the matter.
