As per the official sources, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide necessary funding, which is estimated to cost PKR 30 billion. Reportedly, the ADB and the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) representatives will execute a two-month survey for the sewage treatment plant project and upon approval, the groundbreaking for the project will be held in March 2022.
Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Chairman Tariq Murtaza termed it a mega project, which will be linked to drains of Rawalpindi through the sewage tunnel, to be siphoned to the treatment plant. He said that water from the city’s drains will also flow into the tunnel, which will be 10 ft wide and will be constructed 10 ft below the current Nullah Leh’s depth and fortified with a concrete wall.

It was also highlighted that upon the construction of said tunnel, Nullah Leh will only be used as a storm drain. The water treatment plant is said to be developed on 5,500 kanals currently owned by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) in Gorakhpur. The said plant will treat the entire sewage of Rawalpindi and the treated water will then be directed to Soan River.
