Karachi: The Sindh government plans to develop the first urban forest in a bid to tackle environmental degradation – a news source reported.
Sindh Minister for Forest and Wildlife Syed Nasir Hussain Shah chaired a meeting of the forest department. The officials concerned gave briefings on the Sustainable Forest Management Policy, 2019.

Shah said that a comprehensive policy will be devised for the expansion of forest cover. He added that a sustainable system based on merit will be formulated.
The minister emphasised the need to develop Sindh’s forest cover. He said that climate change has added to the city’s pollution woes. He added that the first urban forest will be developed in Karachi. The initiative will be extended to other urban centres in the country.

The programme forms part of the Green Karachi project. Saplings will be planted near Malir rivulet under a public-private partnership arrangement. The minister directed the officials concerned to initiate contacts with several NGOs with regard to the project.
