Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has approved to provide PKR 8 billion for the revised plan of Koral Chowk-Motorway Chowk signal-free corridor, according to news published in the leading newspaper on May 31. The 22-kilometre long signal free corridor project in Pindi will reduce travel time Islamabad International Airport (IIA) and the motorway.

Previously, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) had planned to construct the signal-free corridor from Koral Chowk to the Motorway Chowk through Peshawar Road, however, the plan has now been revised. As per the new plan, the starting point of the corridor will be Ammar Chowk.
As per the details, the provincial government will provide PKR 8 billion to the RDA for this signal-free corridor project after the completion of the feasibility study. It was disclosed that the feasibility study will be conducted in July while the RDA has already surveyed the area and finalised the initial plan.
According to the initial plan, underpasses will be constructed on the Mall in front of Pearl Continental Hotel, General Headquarters (GHQ) Chowk, General Post Office Chowk and the Military Hospital Chowk. Besides this, a flyover will be developed at Ammar Chowk and Qasim Market.
Currently, the travelling time to Peshawar Road from Kutchery Chowk and Nur Khan Airbase is more than one hour. With completion of this signal-free corridor, it will reduce it to 20 minutes. The news source also mentioned that the cantonment authorities plan to run public transport on the route from Saddar to Motorway and the IIA, work on which will start after the completion of the signal free corridor project in Pindi.

RDA Director General Anwar Jappa stated that the authority has plans to make Liaquat Bagh Chowk signal-free for which an underpass will be constructed on Murree Road in front of Liaquat Bagh. The RDA has prepared the initial plan, which has been forwarded to the Punjab government for final approval.
