Lahore: The Punjab government has issued PKR 1.2 billion for union councils around the province, a news source reported. A notification has been issued to transfer the funds into the accounts of the departments concerned.
The funds have been issued under May’s Provincial Finance Commission (PFC) share. A figure of PKR 300,000 has been issued to each union council under the head of ‘Expenses’. Of the total, Lahore’s 274 union councils have been issued PKR 82.2 million.
The funds have been transferred to designated Deputy Commissioner accounts. The finance department has also issued the notification for the transfers. This is the first time that funds have been issued since the launch of the new local body system.
The new local government (LG) bill was passed earlier this month by the Punjab Assembly. The new local body system comprises a two-tier administrative system: Panchayat in rural areas, and Neighbourhoods Councils in urban areas.
The district councils have been abolished under the rural local governments, and a Tehsil Council will replace them at each tehsil level.
A panchayat system has been replaced for each mouza, replacing the existing union councils; introducing 22,000 panchayat instead of 3,281 union councils.
