Peshawar: Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System wins the 5th International Award for Bus Industry Restructuring Program (BIRP) — an initiative for restricting and revitalising the public transport system, according to news published in the leading newspaper on January 9.

TransPeshawar CEO Dr Tariq Usman revealed this achievement during a press briefing on Tuesday. The Sustainable Transport Award (STA) for this year recognized Peshawar with an honorable mention for its groundbreaking Bus Industry Restructuring Program (BIRP). The initiative, orchestrated by TransPeshawar, focused on restructuring, and revitalizing the public transport system in the city, leading to the scrapping of 504 outdated vehicles.
Implemented with environmental considerations in mind, the BIRP initiative replaced the obsolete vehicles with modern, climate-friendly diesel-hybrid buses. This transformation resulted in a safer, more inclusive, accessible, and environmentally friendly transport system for the residents of Peshawar.

Among the global nominees for the prestigious award were outstanding projects from India, Argentina, UAE, Brazil, Colombia, Turkey, and China. Peshawar’s BRT system stood out with its fifth international recognition, further solidifying its position as a benchmark for excellence in the field.
