Lahore: The Punjab Provincial Development Working Party (PPDWP) on Thursday (August 11) approved PKR 1.128 billion for the construction of the Rawalpindi Mohra Shera Dam project, news sources reported. The dam will have a total storage capacity of 5820-acre feet (AFT) and will irrigate 4,500 acres of land.

Reportedly, the approval for the project was given during the second meeting of the PPDWP for the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23). As per Project Concept-1 (PC-1), the dam will be built to provide potable water for the Rawalpindi district and store water for the dry season. Due to its importance, the Punjab government has included the project in the annual development programme (ADP) for FY23. Moreover, in the same meeting, PPDWP also approved funds of PKR 2.17 billion for the provision of PET Scan and Cyclotron Machines at Nishtar Hospital, Multan.

It is worth noting that the Mohra Shera Dam was first approved in 2008. However, the initiative could not get off the ground due to a lack of funds.
