Lahore: The Pakistan Railway (PR) has prepared PC-1 for the rehabilitation of the Lahore-Chak Amru rail line and will submit it to the federal government to be included in the Public Sector Development Programme in the next fiscal year, according to news published in the national dailies on May 23.

Chairman Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Chairman Dr Habib Ur Rehman Gilani revealed that a meeting was held at Narowal in which attendees were informed that PC-1 worth PKR 14 billion of Lahore-Chak Amru through Narowal and Kartarpur rail section was prepared for funds allocation. As per the details, the PR will replace critical stretches of the existing track and maintain the existing engines, coaches, and relay interlocking/signalling system.
Moreover, the said rail line can be of international significance since Sikhs can use it to reach Kartarpur and other temples within the shortest time. Keeping this in mind, the PR has been asked to complete it as a top priority. Reportedly, the train is operational from Lahore to Narowal; however, due to the dilapidated condition of the track, the train’s speed is limited to 60 km per hour.

Chairman Gilani has asked the PR officials to rehabilitate the rail track from Narowal to Kartarpur and start operating two trains daily. If the train is restored completely, the train speed can be increased to 120 km per hour and travel time from Lahore to Kartarpur will be reduced to one hour. PR Additional General Manager Amir Baloch mentioned that the PC-1 of the project will be submitted to the government for approval.
